Every so often we find our plans and expectations totally laid waste.
What then?
My name is Brian Bayley and this was my situation not long ago. I had a successful career in industry. I was an Operations Manager who worked with my team to set new industry benchmarks in the production and delivery of prototype semiconductors. I restored the reputation and self-esteem of one badly underperforming team. I worked directly with customers to plan and manage the production of unique, one-of-a-kind products. I was the Chairman of a county budget committee. I was a Project Manager working on new product introduction. Finally, I was the Production Planning focal for a major manufacturer working with many varied teams to improve enterprise production planning across the entire life cycle of our products.
Then it all ended.
The company was in a bad situation and went into “survival mode”. That meant cutting anything that did not directly contribute to revenue. Unfortunately, that resulted in the elimination of my department and the layoff of many good people, including myself.
Normally, this would not present much of an issue. Everyone was very impressed with my resume and background. There was just one, unspoken problem…my age. I am what you could call a “seasoned citizen” and I soon realized that I was in the unenviable position of being too young to retire and too old to hire. You might say I had a big marketing and sales problem.
I’ve read the stories of people in my predicament who were younger than myself and with strong qualifications, who spent years trying to find a new job. Many of them were still looking or simply gave up. I was determined not to suffer that same fate. I needed something where my gray hair could work to my advantage. That is what started me on the path to being a business coach. I immediately took on my first client – me!
My “business evaluation” revealed that though I have strong skills in organization, operations, team leadership, and manufacturing, I was weak in the practical aspects of sales and marketing – two essential skills for any business owner. My MBA had taught me the theory of sales and marketing, but not the application. I concluded that I needed a business coach to help me navigate the new waters of entrepreneurship. Enter Andrew, my business coach, and 10X.
I rarely do anything without research. I am a natural born skeptic who is skeptical of those making bold claims and equally skeptical of their skeptics. Long story short, my research led me to a gentleman named Grant Cardone – self-made billionaire and sales and marketing expert. I know…bold claim. Only, my research proved that Grant Cardone isn’t another YouTube/Facebook guru touting how great his program is. Oh, he does do that, but he has the record to show that in his case it is more of a statement of fact rather than an exaggerated boast. This opinion was sealed when my wife and I attended one of his 10X Growth Conferences. It was held at the MGM Grand Arena. It was full of small business owners who were achieving great success following Grant’s program. I also saw who took time from their schedules to sit with Grant on a center stage and share their story. This included over ten highly successful people from across the spectrum of industry including finance, energy, medical, and entertainment. Most came from humble backgrounds and included Shark Tank investor Robert Herjavec, a sandwich maker named Jimmy John, an actor named Ryan Reynolds, and a domestic goddess named Martha Stewart. Though their paths to success were different, they all shared the 10X mindset defined by Grant Cardone. Andrew is also a 10X business coach and a successful entrepreneur who left one coaching franchise to join Grant Cardone’s team. This and my experience at the conference sold me on the 10X approach and set me on the path to becoming a 10X Certified Business Coach.
As my first client, I bought the Cardone University series of in-depth courses on sales, marketing, and scaling (amongst many other topics) and started studying. My business background and graduate studies told me that everything presented in the series made perfect sense – it was just presented as a “how to do” and not just “how in theory”. I am now on a mission to teach business owner how they can apply this “how to do approach” to grow their own businesses.
